Key Takeaway

Most schools in England and Wales break up for Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026, and the fares follow. The three biggest levers are the day you fly out, the airport you leave from, and where you go — and all three matter more than when you book.

Key Takeaways
  • England and Wales: mostly 26–30 October 2026. Scotland breaks earlier, from around 12 October. Northern Ireland has the shortest break, at the end of the month.
  • The Saturday that half-term starts is the dearest day to fly. The Sunday and Monday are usually cheaper.
  • Different regions breaking at different times means the "expensive week" is not the same everywhere.
  • Checking more than one UK airport is the quickest saving there is.
  • Taking children out in term time risks a fine in England — £80 per parent per child, rising to £160.
In this guide

Half-term is the one week of autumn when the price of a flight has nothing to do with the destination and everything to do with the calendar. The same seat to the Canaries can cost far more on the Saturday school breaks up than it did the Saturday before — not because anything changed at the other end, but because millions of families are trying to leave at once.

You cannot move the school holiday. You can move almost everything else, and that is what this guide is about.

    When Is October Half-Term 2026?

Council dates apply formally to community and voluntary-controlled schools; academies and free schools set their own, usually close by. Always check your child's own school calendar — and its INSET days — before you pay for anything.

The Saturday half-term starts is one of the busiest days of the autumn at every UK airport.

    Why Regional Differences Help You

Scotland's October break lands a fortnight before England's. That means the airline pricing a flight from Glasgow or Edinburgh is fighting a different peak from the one pricing Manchester or Birmingham. For a Scottish family the expensive week is the middle of October; for an English one it is the last week.

It also means the week you are travelling in may be someone else's quiet week at the other end. Most of mainland Europe has its own autumn break at different times, and destinations further afield do not care about the British school calendar at all — only about how many Britons are flying there.

    Five Ways to Pay Less

    1

Fly on the Sunday or Monday, not the Saturday

The first Saturday of half-term is when everyone wants to leave. Going a day or two later — or coming back on the last Saturday rather than the Sunday — often takes the sharpest edge off the fare. If your school's INSET day falls on the Friday before or the Monday after, that is your extra day.

    2

Check every airport you could reasonably drive to

The same week to the same resort can differ by a lot between two airports an hour apart. We price ten UK airports separately rather than asking for "anywhere in the UK", and the airport comparison shows the spread for every destination at once.

    3

Pick a destination the crowd is not picking

The Canaries and Turkey absorb much of the October demand. Somewhere a little further or a little less obvious — Madeira, Agadir or Sal — is often priced against a different, smaller rush. Our winter sun board ranks them by this week's fare.

    4

Price the flight and the room separately

Packages are sometimes the cheapest way to go in half-term, and sometimes they are not. Price the flight on its own, then the hotel on its own, then the package — it takes ten minutes and it is the only way to know. Package holidays also carry ATOL protection, which is worth something in its own right.

    5

Know what "late" means for half-term

Last-minute bargains are rare in school holidays, because the seats sell regardless. If you have not booked by mid-September, watch the fare for your chosen route daily rather than waiting for a drop — and be ready to book when it looks reasonable instead of holding out for a price that is not coming.

Where Is Still Warm at the End of October?

Late October is the tipping point: the Mediterranean is cooling, and the reliable warmth moves south. These are the places on our board that are still properly warm that week, all within a direct flight of most UK airports:

    • Tenerife and Lanzarote — about four hours, no time difference, and the GHIC works. The safest choice for younger children.
    • Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh — the warmest sea within five hours, and all-inclusive boards that fix the budget in advance.
    • Paphos and Antalya — still warm in late October, but on the edge; the evenings are cooler.
    • Agadir — Atlantic beach, reliable sun, and only an hour ahead of the UK once the clocks go back on 25 October.

    What About Term-Time Holidays?

It is the obvious workaround, and in England it is an expensive one. Since August 2024, a penalty notice can be considered after five days of unauthorised absence — which is a single week's holiday. The fine is £80 per parent, per child if paid within 21 days, rising to £160 if paid within 28 days, and a second fine for the same child within three years is charged at £160 straight away. Schools can authorise absence only in exceptional circumstances, and a cheaper flight is not one.

Do the sum before you decide: for two parents and two children, one fine each is £320 before anyone has paid more for a late payment.

Is it cheaper to book half-term flights early?

Usually, yes. School-holiday seats sell whatever the price, so the fall in fare that sometimes happens close to departure on quieter weeks rarely comes. Booking two to four months ahead is the safer bet.

Do all schools in England have half-term on the same week?

Most do, but not all. Council dates apply to community and voluntary-controlled schools; academies and free schools set their own. Check your school's calendar before you book.

Where is hot for October half-term?

The Canary Islands and Egypt's Red Sea coast are the most reliable. Cyprus and southern Turkey are still warm but cooling by the last week of October.
