Jamaica is tropical with a wet half and a dry half, and the wet half overlaps the Atlantic hurricane season — which is what takes this destination off our board for a stretch each year rather than a rainfall figure. The island has been hit properly several times in living memory, and even a storm that passes well offshore closes the airport, cancels flights in blocks and shuts the beaches for days.
The mountains complicate the picture in a useful way. The Blue Mountains and the central range wring out the trade winds on the north-east side, so Port Antonio and the east are markedly wetter than Negril in the west, which sits in the rain shadow and is the driest part of the island. If the trip is in a marginal week, the western end is the safer bet.
For a British calendar the dry season falls neatly across our winter, which is why it is both the best time and the most expensive — Christmas and New Year on this coast is the steepest fortnight of the year, and the all-inclusives impose minimum stays. The weeks after it, once the North American winter rush thins, are the same coast at a considerably lower rate with the same weather.
Price the transfer before the hotel
Negril and Ocho Rios are both ninety minutes from the airport. A private car each way runs £70 to £110, which can exceed the saving that made the far-coast hotel look cheaper.
The case for it
Why Montego Bay
Jamaica is a mountainous island the size of Yorkshire with a culture whose reach is out of all proportion to it. Reggae, ska, dub and dancehall all came from here, and the Blue Mountains behind Kingston grow what is arguably the most expensive coffee in the world. The north coast, where almost every British visitor lands, is the resort side: a run of bays and river mouths from Negril in the west through Montego Bay to Ocho Rios.
For a British traveller two things make it unusually easy. English is the official language — Patois is what people speak among themselves, but there is no barrier at all — and there is no visa, no fee and no arrival authorisation to buy. After a run of destinations that want forms, insurance certificates and state taxes, Jamaica asks for a passport and a completed customs declaration.
The reservations are geography and safety, and both are specific rather than vague. Montego Bay's airport serves a coast a hundred kilometres long, so a cheap package to Negril or Ocho Rios comes with a transfer of ninety minutes each way that is rarely priced separately. And the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to particular districts, including parts of Montego Bay itself — not the resort strip, but close enough that knowing which streets matters.

Five things worth doing
- 01
Climb Dunn's River Falls
A limestone waterfall at Ocho Rios that flows over terraces you climb in a human chain, guided, in the water. Entry is $25 (about £20) for non-resident adults and $17 (£13) for children. It is the single most visited attraction in Jamaica and it is timed against the cruise ships — check the arrivals schedule for Ocho Rios and go on a day with none in port, or be there at opening. Water shoes are hired at the gate and are genuinely necessary.

Raft the Martha Brae
Thirty minutes east of Montego Bay, a ninety-minute drift down a river on a thirty-foot bamboo raft poled by a captain who has done it for decades. About £60 per raft, which takes two people. It is slow, quiet and completely unlike everything else sold on this coast, and the captains are the reason — they are licensed, long-serving and full of the river. Go in the morning before the coach parties arrive from the hotels.

Spend a day on Seven Mile Beach
Negril's beach is the one from the photographs — genuinely long, genuinely white, and public along its whole length, because all Jamaican beaches below the high-water mark are. Free. The bars along it charge about $10 (£8) for a lounger, or waive it if you buy lunch and a couple of drinks. It is ninety minutes from the airport, so as a day trip from Montego Bay it eats the day; as a base it is the better beach by a distance.

Go up to the Blue Mountains for coffee
The estates above Kingston grow Blue Mountain coffee, which is protected by origin and sells for several times the price of anything else. Tours from the north coast are a long day; from Kingston they are a morning, at around £40 including transport and tasting. Buy the beans at the estate rather than at the airport, where the same bag is double. The drive up is narrow, steep and best left to a driver.

Eat jerk at Boston Bay, or at a drum
Jerk is a cooking method rather than a sauce — pimento wood, scotch bonnet, allspice, and a slow smoke over a split oil drum. Boston Bay on the east coast is where it is said to have started and is a long way from Montego Bay; the good news is that every town on the north coast has a drum by the roadside. A quarter chicken with festival bread is about £5. Look for smoke, a queue and a corrugated lid, not a menu.

What it costs once you land
Jamaica is more expensive than most of the Caribbean once you leave an all-inclusive, and much of the tourist economy quotes in US dollars. Route taxis and local food are the exception and are very cheap.

Before you book
Practical, for a British passport
Entry rules are for a British Citizen passport holder and come from gov.uk, read on 2026-08-07. They change; check before you fly.
- Airport
- MBJ, Sangster International, five minutes from the Montego Bay hotel strip and the arrival point for almost every British flight. It also serves the whole north coast: Ocho Rios is about ninety minutes east and Negril ninety minutes west. Check what your package includes, because the transfer is often the largest unlisted cost of the trip.
- Entry
- No visa, plus an online immigration and customs form. No fee. Up to usually 90 days. Valid for the visit, with two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. File the Immigration and Customs Form C5 online before you arrive where you can. Arrival and departure taxes are normally inside the ticket price, so there is nothing to pay at the airport. Your leaving date is stamped in and is not negotiable at the other end.
- Currency
- Jamaican dollar, but the tourist economy quotes and takes US dollars almost everywhere — bring some. Paying in US dollars usually means a worse rate, so use Jamaican for anything local. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants; route taxis, jerk stands and markets are cash.
- Language
- English is official and universal; Jamaican Patois is what people speak among themselves and it is closer to a separate language than an accent. No barrier for a visitor, and one of the few destinations on this list where none exists at all.
- Time zone
- Five hours behind the UK in winter and six behind British Summer Time. Jamaica does not change its clocks, so the gap moves when Britain does rather than when Jamaica does.
- Plugs
- Type A and B, 110V. A British type-G plug does not fit and the voltage is half of home; chargers cope, hair appliances usually do not. Some hotels fit UK sockets as well, but do not rely on it.
- Health
- The GHIC does not apply. Private hospitals in Montego Bay and Kingston are reasonable and expect payment or an insurer's guarantee up front; anything serious means an air evacuation, so cover for that matters. Mosquito-borne dengue occurs. Tap water in the resort areas is treated and safe; bottled is what most visitors drink anyway.
- Safety
- This is the row to read. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to specific districts including parts of Montego Bay, Kingston and Spanish Town — not the resort strips, but close enough that the boundaries matter. Jamaica's homicide rate is among the highest in the world and is overwhelmingly concentrated in areas visitors never go. Use hotel or licensed taxis rather than walking after dark, and take advice locally on where not to drive.

Montego Bay
Five minutes from arrivals, with the Hip Strip, Doctor's Cave beach and the widest range of hotels from small guesthouses to large all-inclusives. The obvious choice for a short trip or a late arrival. It is a working city of a hundred thousand people as well as a resort, so the areas change character quickly and the beach is good rather than exceptional.

Ninety minutes west, and the beach the island is sold on — seven miles of white sand with the cliffs at Rick's Café at the southern end. More relaxed and more low-rise than Montego Bay, with a long-standing independent traveller scene alongside the resorts. The transfer is the cost, in money and in an hour and a half each way.

Ninety minutes east, closest to Dunn's River Falls, the river rafting and the zip lines, and the main cruise port on the north coast. The best base for anyone who wants to do things rather than lie down. The flip side is the cruise schedule: on a two-ship day the town and every attraction in it is overwhelmed, and the shopping is aimed squarely at that trade.

Route taxis are how Jamaica travels: shared cars running fixed routes, marked with red licence plates, that pick up and drop along the way for about a pound a leg. They are cheap, frequent and entirely legitimate, and they are the reason you do not need a car for short hops between towns. Unmarked cars offering the same thing are not licensed and are the ones to decline.
For airport transfers, book in advance rather than negotiating at arrivals. A shared shuttle to a Montego Bay hotel is about twenty pounds; a private car to Negril or Ocho Rios is seventy to a hundred and ten. Knutsford Express runs comfortable scheduled coaches between the main towns for around ten pounds and is much cheaper than a private transfer if your timings suit it.
Hire a car only if you intend to explore properly. Driving is on the left, which helps, but the roads are narrow, potholed in places and driven assertively, and the interior routes are slow and poorly signed. Most visitors are better served by a driver hired for a day at around eighty pounds, which also solves the question of where it is sensible to go.
Food and local tips
Jerk is the thing to get right and the rule is simple: look for a split oil drum with a corrugated lid, pimento wood smoke and a queue. A quarter chicken chopped through the bone with festival — a slightly sweet fried dumpling — costs about five pounds and is better than anything a resort buffet will manage. Ask for it wet or dry; wet means sauce on top, and the sauce is where the scotch bonnet is.
Beyond jerk, ackee and saltfish is the national breakfast and is genuinely unlike anything else — ackee is a fruit that cooks to the texture of scrambled egg. Look for curry goat, oxtail with butter beans, and patties from Juici or Tastee, which are the two national chains and cost about a pound. Red Stripe is the beer; rum is Appleton or Wray & Nephew, and the overproof is 63% and not a joke.
