When to book

Antalya has one of the sharper seasonal swings on this board, and the Taurus mountains are the reason. They rise to over three thousand metres directly behind the city, trapping the sea air against the coast — which makes the summers heavy and humid, and gives the coast the highest rainfall totals in Mediterranean Türkiye during the wet half of the year. It also means you can be on the beach and in snow within ninety minutes; the ski resort at Saklıkent is an hour and a half above the city.

Landing in Antalya

You lose 3 hours flying out. Eastbound is the harder direction to adjust to, because you are asking your body to fall asleep earlier than it wants to. Book an arrival that lets you stay up until local evening rather than napping.

Airport AYT, Antalya, twenty-five minutes east of the city and among the busiest holiday airports in Europe. The T1A tram runs from the terminal into town for under a pound. Belek is about forty minutes east, Kemer forty-five minutes west and Side an hour — check which your hotel is, because they are in opposite directions.
Currency Turkish lira. Cards work in the city, in hotels and on the tram; markets, dolmuş minibuses and beach kiosks want cash. Change at a döviz office rather than the airport, and expect resort areas to quote in euros or sterling at a rate that suits them.
Language Turkish. English, German and Russian are all widely spoken across the resort belt; in the city away from Kaleiçi it thins quickly, and menus stop being translated.
