Everything worth knowing before you book this route — how far it is, how long you will be in the air, whether a direct flight exists from Bristol, and what the fare is doing.

How long is the flight from Bristol to Cancún?

The great-circle distance from Bristol Airport (BRS) to Cancún is 4,839 miles. Flown nonstop, that works out at roughly 10h 19m in the air, including taxi time at both ends.

Expect the return leg to differ. Flying westbound on the way out, you are pushing against the jet stream, so the outbound and inbound block times on this route differ by up to 45 minutes. Airlines schedule for it — it is not a delay.

Can you fly Bristol to Cancún direct?

No nonstop from Bristol

The nearest direct flights leave from Birmingham (about 90 miles away), London Heathrow and Gatwick (100 miles) and Manchester (140 miles). From Bristol itself it is a one-stop trip. The connection is worth choosing rather than accepting: a European or Gulf hub usually beats backtracking to Heathrow, because it keeps you out of a domestic leg and a terminal change, and it is frequently the cheaper ticket as well.

What it costs from Bristol

The cheapest return we have measured from Bristol to Cancún is £736, flying out 9 Feb and back 23 Feb. That is this airport's own best week, found by searching it separately from the other nine — every UK airport wins on a different date.

When to book

The Yucatán is tropical with a wet half and a dry half, and the wet half doubles as the Atlantic hurricane season — that is what takes this destination off our board for a stretch each year. Rain here is usually a violent hour in the afternoon rather than a lost day, but a storm several hundred miles out closes the airport, cancels flights in blocks and shuts the beaches, and that risk is different in kind from a shower.

Landing in Cancún

You gain 5 hours flying out. Westbound is the kinder direction — staying up later comes more naturally than going to bed early — so most travellers feel normal within a day or two.

Airport CUN, twenty minutes south of the hotel zone and the second busiest airport in Mexico. Arrivals opens into a corridor of aggressive timeshare touts posing as transfer or information desks — walk past all of them to the marked ADO counter or the official taxi rank outside. This is the single most reported annoyance of a Cancún arrival.
Currency Mexican peso, though the hotel zone quotes and takes US dollars at a rate that favours the seller. Pay in pesos wherever you can and decline the card machine's offer to charge you in sterling. ATMs inside bank branches rather than freestanding ones in shops; the latter carry heavy fees and skimming reports.
Language Spanish. English is universal in the hotel zone and on the tourist coast, and thins quickly downtown and inland. Maya is still spoken in the villages around the archaeological sites.
